Bead Peeps Swap 'n' Hop - The Creamsicle Conundrum

Bead swaps and design challenges are a great way to get the creative juices flowing, so when I saw a call on the Facebook group Bead Peeps for a swap, I was all in. And I lucked out, too, getting the lovely Lori Alainn Blanchard of Alainn Jewelry as my partner.  She sent me the delicious beads below for me to work with:

and the handcrafted focal:

Lori had asked me what colors I find most challenging to work with, and then, as any good swap partner would, she sent me that exact thing -- flourescent creamsicle orange.

I could almost hear her laughing from several hundred miles away.....;-

The first thing I worked on was the right way to highlight the focal, and I hoped to use the tilas to do so. But after banging my head against the wall trying several different unsuccessful configurations, I decided the tilas wanted to work elsewhere, and concentrated on the focal. Here's what happened:

All I added from my stash was some merlot and dark gold seed beads, the lapis rounds in the neckstrap, and my own fabricated gold clasp. And if you look really closely in the first round of beads around the focal, you'll see that I used some of the creamsicle seeds there.

Next up was a bracelet:

Then I wanted to use the faceted Czech glass Lori had sent.  Initially, I thought those would go with the focal, but once I'd finished the centerpiece, the greens and blues of the Czech glass just didn't work with the reds and turquoises, so I set them aside on the worktable.  They ended up near a piece I'd done several months ago and called Iris - the blues and greens worked really well together! Serendipity worked in my favor this time!

There were other colors of seed beads that I hadn't yet used, so a pair of freeform peyote earrings seemed to be in order:

And a ring:

And, finally, something to celebrate that challenging creamsicle color!  I call these earrings Creamsicle Conundrum:

Here's a family picture:

Thanks for reading all the way down, thanks to Lori for being a fun and generous partner, and thanks to Linda Anderson for hosting the swap!

Now, go look at all the creations from others who've taken part in the swap challenge -- get ready for some serious eye candy!

Anchors Aweigh - The Reveal

The lovely and wonderfully talented Rita of Toltec Jewels came up with a great opportunity to showcase the talents of artist Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio, challenging a group of us to create jewelry based on her adorable anchor beads.  Cute, cute, cute!

(Caution - bad nautical themed puns may follow.  I apologize in advance.)

Several ideas came, and mercifully sank into the depths of oblivion before they could catch wind and sail too far. But then freeform peyote came to my rescue and gave me a way to add the flavor of waves and water, with lots of oceanic shades of blue ranging from deepest blue to the white/blue of sea froth.

It occurred to me today that the earrings are a good metaphor for the past three months. Lots of things in my life have kind of been at loose ends, drifting as if at sea (if you want to torture the comparison.) With uncertainty on lots of fronts, life has been a bit freeform, turning in unexpected directions and certainly not symmetrical or predictable.

As soon as I finished the earrings, one of major uncertainties in my life was resolved. So I'm going to look at these earrings as a talisman for smoother sailing and calmer seas ahead.

Thanks to Rita for setting up a fun challenge, and thanks to Diana for her artistry, which was a great source of inspiration.  Please sit right back and take a (three hour?!?) cruise through the rest of the creations made by the other participants.  Bon voyage!

On The Wings Of Love - Revealing the Color Red

In the depths of winter, we often search for anything that brings feelings of warmth.  If you work with color, the warmest thing you can do is work with red.  Of course, red is also the color for Valentine's Day, a day wrapped in red (and chocolate, but beading chocolate just gets messy).

With this in mind, Karen Williams challenged the members of the Facebook Freeform Peyote page to create something with red, and some of us are part of a mini-blog hop to share our creations.

I started with a gorgeous focal from JulsBeads, with a gorgeous deep ruby red background a decorations of other reds, greenish turquoise, and a hint of orange.

As I worked, the freeform took on the shape of wings. So I call this piece "On The Wings of Love".

It's a little lacier and more open than my typical freeform work.  I also took the opportunity to use some tilas and twin beads -- new for me in freeform.

Thanks, Karen, for the idea and inspiration that I needed to push back into freeform.  Lots of folks will be revealing their creations on the Facebook group page.  If you want to see the other participants in the mini blog hop, see here:

Lots To Do!

How did it all of a sudden become February?!?

But it is, and along with shivering through the snow and ice (and snow, and ice, and then for good measure, snow), there are a couple of challenges that are percolating on my worktable for reveal in the next few weeks.

First up is a challenge dreamed up by the fabulous Karen Williams on the Facebook Freeform Peyote Beading page.  Called the Color Red Challenge, it's an invitation to create a piece, using shades of red and at least partially using freeform peyote. There will be a mini blog hop as well, and the reveal is February 15. So next Saturday, while you're recuperating from all the Valentine's chocolate, be sure to check it out.  I'll post my piece here, and I'll have links to the other blog hop participants as well.

(By the way, if you haven't already heard, Karen has a kickstarter project running to fund her second book on freeform peyote.  If you're familiar with Karen's skills at teaching and inspiring others to chase their creative muse, check it out.  If you're not familiar with Karen, you owe it to yourself to check it out!)

The second challenge is the February She Made/She Made, which this month has expanded beyond the two usual participants, the lovely Therese Frank and the equally lovely Christine Altmiller, to include a few others who will be working with wonderful clay faces made by an Alabama artist. The reveal for this one is February 28. This face is a bit of a challenge, but I'm so excited about my idea for it I can hardly wait to reveal it (of course, that means I'd better get off my butt and finish it!).

Mark your calendars, and come back to visit for these two reveals.  Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna pile up on the sofa under a nice warm blanket and watch the Olympics while I work on my creations.

A Spike In Activity (Bad Pun, Fun Beads)

A while back, the fabulous Cynthia Machata of Antiquity Travelers reached out to some bloggy friends with an offer -- would we be interested in trying to make something with some howlite spikes she'd found at her local bead store? I took her up on the offer so fast, I think my keyboard was smoking...Subtle, I was not.

So here's what arrived in the mail:

Actually, this is only a portion of what was in the package. Cynthia sent both black dyed and natural white howlite. I just forgot to take a picture of the whole pack before jumping in. Bad, bad beady swapper, I know.

I've done several necklaces with a sterling armature that I shape and then use as a framework for freeform peyote (see some of them in posts here and here). It's a fun technique that seemed well suited to these spikes. But these beauties cried out for copper.

To keep the focus on the cool spikes, I decided to keep the accent beads black and white as well.

A lot more beading could have gone onto this frame, but less was more here.

I have two black spikes left over, lurking on my worktable. I think they're destined to be some bold earrings, but you never know what'll happen.

Want to see what Cynthia made with her spikes?  Go here. And keep your eyes open for gemstone spikes at your local bead store -- they are big fun to work with!

BSBP7 Reveal! Hooray!

If you're looking for the Hats Off Challenge sign ups, go here!

The spectacular Lori Anderson is throwing another world-wide celebration of creativity, the Bead Soup Blog Hop.  My partner this time is the astonishingly talented Nancy Dale. If you don't know her work, go check it out here, and check out the beautiful things she created with the soup I sent her here.

After seeing Nancy's work, you can perhaps understand why I was a little nervous about doing justice to the soup she sent me. ("A little nervous" = "shaking in my shoes, staring at the wall and murmuring mantras to myself")

And in Nancy's case, "soup" = "soups".  She sent two distinct colorways, both featuring lampwork by JulsBeads.

gorgeous turquoises, creams, sterling, gemstones, and seed bead mix

warm greens and golds, vermeil, seed bead mix
I started with the turquoise mix, wanting to use as much of Nancy's soup and add little (or nothing) from my own stash.  I know it's a sign of hell freezing over - denying myself the excuse to go bead shopping!!  But seriously, Nancy spoiled me so completely, there was really no need to enhance it.

The first piece, a necklace, uses many of the lampwork beads, turquoise and jade beads, crystals from the seed bead mix, sterling spacers, and the silk ribbon that Nancy had tied the bead soup package closed with (too pretty to waste!)  All I added here was my own handforged clasp, and the textured silver rings.

Nancy and I are both beadweavers (though I realize I'm flattering myself to put myself in the same sentence with her name), so I had to do a freeform peyote piece.  I detached the triple strand portions from the clasp, and used the toggle and loop here.

And what would a soup be without a few pairs of earrings coming from it?

Lampwork, turquoise, sterling spacers
Peyote woven bead mix, turquoise, jade, sterling spacers

Sterling triple strand clasp used as earring components, shells, bead mix

There is very little of the blue soup left over!

Then I tackled the green mix, and landed in the middle of a vision that I could only partially complete before time to share.  But if your stomach is strong enough to handle it in its immodestly incomplete state, here it is:

Nancy does some amazing bead embroidery, so I really wanted to do at least one embroidered piece.  I used the green focal as the center of the medallion, and did a play on the bead's tendrils (which have a beautiful blue luster) as an inspiration of the blue tendrils that spread out.  The rest of the medallion was to be filled in with a mosaic of the seed bead mix from Nancy, but I was worried that it would be a little bulky - so I cut out small amorphous shapes from the backing to echo the shapes between tendrils on the focal. Eventually, when the backing is added to the medallion, I'll do a bead edging around each of the cutouts with gold 15s, and edge the outer edge as well.  It's honking big (about 5" across!!), so the necklace that it finally becomes part of will be a real statement!

Thank you Nancy, for being a great partner and a good new friend.  Thank you Lori, for being the hostess with the mostest once again.  And thank you, for staying with me through this extremely long post.  I'd love for you to leave a comment before you go enjoy the eye candy at these other blogs!
