Apparently, I was channeling all the stress of whatever was going on at the time into my thread tension, because about two inches into the spiral, this happened.

Arghhhh!!! (Although my language at the time was, I admit, far more colorful).
I have put this one away for another, calmer day.

Oh dear! It was looking great before the explosion. I'm going to make a cellini spiral one of these days as i love how they look
Frustrating! Especially when I know just how long it takes to make progress on Cellini. What kind of thread were you using?

Cellini has tension even without tension. Glad you didn't poke your eye out ;-)
Those celini spirals ask a lot of a simple little piece of thread.
